A modern interpretation of the traditional Korean courtyard house or Hanok, this ground up house in rural Sonoma sits on a 3 acre site and has living spaces sandwiched between an elevated perimeter floor plane and floating roof plane. The floating deck (torenmaru in Korea and engawa in Japan) connects the main house, guest house, and garage structures in addition to surrounding the interior courtyard pool and garden. Site walls finished in travertine ground the house and provide vertical relief from the primary horizontal elements that organize the house. An open courtyard features a traditional water feature, lap pool, and garden area. Landscaping is intended to be ‘cultivated wild’, with native planting running right up to the house. The project is currently under construction and scheduled for completion in Winter 2019.
